For British buyers, France remains one of the most sought-after locations when it comes to buying a holiday home or making a permanent move. In fact, France is the second-most popular location for Brits seeking property abroad – and the South of France in particular is a hotspot for overseas buyers. If you’re moving to the region or planning to buy a holiday home here, you may be wondering where to buy property in the South of France. In today’s insider’s guide, we take a look at some of the most popular destinations.

Where to Buy Property in the South of France

Property in the South of France is some of the most beautiful and luxurious anywhere in the world. Benefitting from year-round sunshine and surrounded by glorious beaches and resorts, the location is naturally a popular one – and that popularity tends to drive prices up, particularly along the French Riviera. As we covered recently in our South of France Property Guide, there are places where more affordable property can be purchased – but today we’re putting budgets aside, and simply taking a look at five glorious locations to buy property in the South of France.

Languedoc-Roussillon

With ancient villages, Greek ruins, and medieval castles all nestled in and amongst a patchwork of vineyards and farmland, the towns and villages in Languedoc-Roussillon are especially authentic – and properties are usually cheaper here than in, for example, Provence or along the Riviera. The region is also generally much quieter compared to other parts of the South of France – fewer tourists venture here than elsewhere. This may well be welcome news if you’re planning to relocate here yourself – though if you’re after a buy-to-let holiday property, some of the other renowned tourist hotspots on this list may be worth further investigation.

Aquitaine

Towering mountains, deep gorges, dramatic cliffs – Aquitaine is a truly beautiful part of Southern France and a draw for tourists. From the riverside village of Domme to the port town of Bordeaux, when purchasing a holiday property in Aquitaine, you’ll be spoiled for choice. There is also a strong expat community in a number of places in the region, such as Sarlat-la-Caneda and Bergerac – perfect for those looking to move here permanently.

French Riviera

It’s glamorous, it’s sunny, it draws celebrities from all over the world – the French Riviera is in high demand. Sophisticated, fashionable, and affluent, if you’re looking for an elegant environment with an international atmosphere, you will find it in abundance along the Azure Coast. Property here is, of course, expensive, though you can find some more affordable houses by purchasing further in land – away from the immediate hustle and bustle, while still being close enough for you (or your tenants) to dip in and out when the mood takes.

Provence

Another firm favourite with expats is the iconic Provence. Surrounded by lavender fields, olive groves and vineyards, Provence is rustic and romantic – and replete with an assortment of property styles to choose from. The coastal area is, naturally, highly sought-after – as are properties in the rural settings of Saint-Étienne-du-Grès and Fontvielle. Here, you can find old stone country cottages in good repair and, if you’re lucky, a good price.

Poitou-Charentes

A particularly good region if you’re looking to tap into the tourist market, the coastal area of Poitou-Charentes is a popular spot for holidaymakers. Lots of property opportunities are available here, including apartments, B&B properties, and larger homes in need of renovation. There are expat communities as well for those looking to relocate – the city of Poitiers, for example, or Confolens, Cognac, and Jarnac.
